Former Arsenal star Robert Pires looks set for a return to the English Premier League at the ripe old age of 37. Pires most recently turned out in La Liga with Villarreal, but his contract ended last summer and the midfielder is currently a free agent.

According to reports from L’Equipe, Pires will ink a deal with Aston Villa in the next few days, joining up with countryman Gerard Houllier who bosses the Midlands club. Pires has been training with his old club Arsenal in order to keep fit and is eager to return to the Premier League, believing if he can avoid injury then he could enjoy a fine swansong.

Pires turned out for Arsenal for six years before joining Villarreal in 2006 and continuing to perform at the highest level in Spain’s top flight. His vast experience will no doubt give Houllier a boost as he looks to add reinforcements and a winning mentality to the Villa Park outfit.
