Liverpool have offloaded Milan Jovanovic to Anderlecht.

The Serbian striker had agreed a two-year deal with the Belgian club – with the option of a further season – yesterday, but needed the final details of a move agreeing. He will now head back to the scene of his greatest successes as a player so far.

Before joining Liverpool Jovanovic had starred for Standard Liege between 2006 and 2010, earning the nickname "the snake" due to his fleet-footedness and being voted Belgian Footballer of the Year in 2008.

But upon signing for Liverpool last summer, Jovanovic quickly realised he had made a mistake. His move was sealed by Rafael Benitez, but the forward was overlooked by the Spaniard’s successor Roy Hodgson; the 30-year-old’s situation did not improve under Kenny Dalglish in the second half of the 2010/11 campaign.

Jovanovic quickly came to bemoan his lot, made worse by a decision to turn down a switch to Real Madrid to join Liverpool in the hope of enjoying more first team football at Anfield.

Now his brief sojourn is over and the Serbia star will join Anderlecht.

The exact terms of the deal remain unclear, but Liverpool have not requested a fee and may have also had to contribute towards a financial settlement with Jovanovic to cover the drop in wages on offer at Anderlecht – the Serbian earned £60,000 per week at Anfield.

Indeed, Anderlecht’s president Herman Van Holsbeeck travelled to Merseyside earlier today in order to thrash out a final deal with the English club and was ultimately successful.
