Chelsea have confirmed that midfield enforcer Michael Essien has been loaned to Real Madrid.

The Ghana international has penned a season-long loan deal with the Spanish champions and will link up with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho in Madrid.

Essien is believed to be being brought in by Los Blancos as a replacement for French midfielder Lassana Diarra, for whom terms have been agreed with Russian Premier League club Anzhi Makhachkala.

Essien has slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and also struggled with injuries.

He will hope for regular first team football under Mourinho at the Bernabeu and also to play a key role in the club’s La Liga title defence and Champions League push.

Essien joined Chelsea in 2005 from French giants Lyon and has been a resounding success at Stamford Bridge.
