Feyenoord have secured highly-rated defender Stefan de Vrij on a new contract, running until 2015.

The 21-year-old defender has been expected to be the subject of much interest this summer, with English giants Liverpool regularly linked with launching a swoop for his signature, while Arsenal and Chelsea have been credited with monitoring the player’s situation.

However, Feyenoord technical director Martin van Geel claimed in March that De Vrij’s departure should not be presumed set in stone – and now the Rotterdam outfit have indeed moved to keep hold of the defender.

"This reminds me very much that I can continue to be part of this team and club", the Dutchman told Feyenoord’s official site.

"I see many prospects to improve."

Van Geel meanwhile commented: "It is great that, following our agreement with Jordy [Clasie] we have brought talks with Stefan to a good conclusion."

Feyenoord finished third in the Eredivisie this season, level on points (69) with second-placed PSV Eindhoven, but seven off champions Ajax.
