La Liga side Malaga will be excluded from the Europa League next season after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed an appeal filed by the club against the decision by UEFA in December.

The Spanish club were granted permission last month to compete in European club competitions after UEFA’s four-year suspension on the club was lifted, following a meeting within UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB).

The ban came following financial irregularities and unpaid bills, and the Anchovies lodged an appeal to the CAS against the decision from UEFA.

In its appeal, the Spanish club requested that the UEFA decision should be annulled, or, alternatively, replaced with a new decision including less severe sanctions.

However, the CAS have not only dismissed the appeal and barred them from the Europa League in the 2013/14 season, but the Anchovies have also been slapped a fine of €300,000.

Malaga, led by former manager Manuel Pellegrini, finished sixth in La Liga this season.

They also enjoyed an impressive campaign in the Champions League, where they reached until the quarter-final, defeating the likes of AC Milan, as well as FC Porto.
