Sweden could soon play host to the stars of Manchester United, as plans for a friendly between the Premier League champions and AIK Stockholm gather momentum.

AIK are understood to be negotiating with David Moyes’ side over a friendly clash scheduled for 6th August, even if club officials were not keen to disclose any details.

AIK, the 2009 league winners, could only finish seventh last season, but are looking to welcome high-profile visitors to the Friends Arena.

Manchester United clinched their 20th league title last season, but are heading in a new direction with manager Moyes having taken over from Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer.

With Moyes having limited experience playing in Europe, the Red Devils could see foreign clashes as a viable option, but confirmation over the AIK friendly is yet to be made.

The Swedish club’s press officer told newspaper Aftonbladet: "What we can say is that we are negotiating to play a friendly match with a foreign team. But regarding the negotiations, we cannot reveal more than that.

"We do not want to say anything until everything is sorted, as we do not want to risk any cracks on the road.

"When everything is ready, we will reveal who we will face and when, but nothing is clear. As long as it is not signed, we can not talk about it.

"We think it’s an exciting match, but we want everything resolved before we start talking about it. Over the next week, we hope to reveal more."
