Chelsea have confirmed that they submitted a bid for Wayne Rooney, but denied that the deal involved a potential player exchange element.
It had been reported by the BBC that Chelsea offered £10m plus one of David Luiz or Juan Mata for Rooney, which Manchester United rejected.
However, Chelsea have moved quickly to refute that report, claiming that although they did make a bid for Rooney, they did not offer any player in part exchange.
"Chelsea Football Club can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney", the statement, carried by the BBC said.

"Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for avoidance of doubt and contrary to what is apparently being briefed to the press in Sydney, the proposed purchase price does not include the transfer or loan of any players from Chelsea to Manchester United."
Rooney is believed to be unhappy at Manchester United and returned home early from the club’s pre-season tour with an injury.
It is thought the striker is less than pleased about recent comments from new Red Devils boss David Moyes regarding his position in the pecking order at Old Trafford.
