PSV Eindhoven are expecting a "positive outcome" on Ola Toivonen's contract renewal, after technical director Marcel Brands revealed talks were held with the player and his agent.

Toivonen's agent Mino Raiola had been vocal in recent weeks about there being plenty of options on the table – including that of renewing for "many years".

Toivonen's contract runs out next summer and PSV were hopeful of avoiding the possibility of a free transfer.

A one-year extension could be the likely result even if the actual signing has been delayed so far.

"There is no white smoke yet", Brands told De Telegraaf. "But there were good, positive conversations held. A follow-up will come soon.

"The positive feeling I had has only grown stronger after these conversations. I think we're going to come out and work on this together.

"It is better [that the agreement comes] a day later with the player totally convinced of the deal, rather than a day earlier where that belief is lacking."

There had been renewed speculation that Toivonen – who had been Norwich City bound this summer – would be relegated to the reserve squad if he did not agree the extension.

However, Raiola recently claimed he was not aware of any such threats, with the midfielder already on 11 Eredivisie appearances this season.
