Montpellier coach Rolland Courbis has warned Remy Cabella off joining Newcastle in the summer, pointing at the Magpies being thrashed 3-0 by local rivals Sunderland in their own backyard.

Newcastle were comprehensively beaten at St. James' Park by Sunderland, who have been fighting against relegation from the Premier League this season.

Cabella is high up on the Magpies' wanted list and talk has been rife that a bid for the Frenchman will land in time for the summer.

They may face competition from Manchester United, who have also been linked with moving for the playmaker.

And Cabella's current coach at Montpellier, Courbis, has tried to steer the talent away from even thinking about heading to Newcastle.

"Well, this afternoon [yesterday, ed.], I watched a big performance that was produced by this great team Newcastle", he told reporters after his team beat Reims 4-2.

"I would like to correct what I said.

"I said that if I were Cabella, I would not go there for half an hour.

"Now, I would not go there for quarter of an hour!"

Montpellier are believed to be looking for a fee in the region of €17m for Cabella, should they sell, a sum that Manchester United have been credited with preparing.
