Qatar would like to appoint Benitez as national team boss at the end of the season, with the plan being for the Spaniard to build a team for the 2022 World Cup.

That tournament is due to be hosted by Qatar, although it is not yet clear whether it will take place in the summer or the winter.

It also remains to be seen whether Benitez would be willing to take up what would mean an eight-year break from club coaching.

However, if he did agree, Qatar would be willing to put him on a yearly salary of €10m.
