Daniel Agger has warned Liverpool that he cannot live with being third-choice centre-back next season, but feels the situation does not look good for him at Anfield as manager Brendan Rodgers prefers other options.

The Denmark international slipped behind a paring of Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho during the season, as Liverpool finished as runners-up to Manchester City in the Premier League.

That should have Agger dreaming of a return to Champions League football, but instead the defender is fretting about his position at Anfield.

Asked by Danish outlet Bold whether he will still be at Liverpool after the summer, Agger replied: "I don't know. It's up to the coach. It does not look like he's looking my way. There can be many reasons for this."

The centre-back was then pressed on whether he could accept being third-choice centre-back, and replied: "No, of course I cannot."

And Agger feels a big reason for his failure to break into the Liverpool team stems from the side's good results, even if they have been conceding goals.

"It has worked like this all year – the players who have played, if they have won the game, they have played on. If one of them is injured, then they are out of the team and then there is a new one. If you win matches, it does not matter if the other is ready, if they still win football games. This has been true throughout.

"I hit a run of six, seven, eight matches where we won and I played every time, even though the others were ready.

"Then I was unfortunately injured and then you get thrown out. So that's the game. It could of course just be the best two that start and I hope that is how it is looked at."

Now, with Denmark international duty on the horizon against Hungary and Sweden, Agger has a different focus and a relaxed frame of mind.

"I have chosen to focus on these two games.

"So I'll have a long summer break and then we take it as it comes."
