Ruffier is now firmly on Roma's hitlist according to Italian daily La Repubblica, but Arsenal are also tracking the custodian, who has just one year remaining on his contract at Saint-Etienne and could move on this summer.
Gunners boss Wenger is desperate to bring in another goalkeeper having seen Emiliano Viviano return to Palermo after a season-long loan and Lukasz Fabianski leave for Swansea.
Ruffier has been included in Didier Deschamps' France World Cup squad.
He may well not feature in Brazil though, with Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris the firm number 1 for France.
