Sunderland manager Gus Poyet is waiting for Fabio Borini to return from Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States in an attempt to convince him to join the Black Cats.

Poyet's men have had an offer for Borini accepted by Liverpool, a bid of £12m plus a further £2m in bonuses, but the former Roma forward is unsure on heading to the Stadium of Light.

Indeed, while Borini spent last term on loan at Sunderland, he is hoping to impress Reds boss Brendan Rodgers on tour, along with waiting to see what other options arise.

However, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Poyet has not yet given up hope of Borini moving to Sunderland.

And the Uruguayan manager wants to speak to him personally when Liverpool return from their tour in a bid to convince him to move to the north east.

Borini however may have been offered fresh hope of a prolonged Liverpool stay today with the news that the Reds have pulled out of a deal to sign France striker Loic Remy.

Liverpool met the player's release clause at QPR, but his medical results offered cause for concern.
