Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin has admitted that clubs came calling for his services this summer, but explained he never had any intention of quitting the Vicente Calderon.

The Uruguayan helped Atletico Madrid to their first La Liga title since 1996 last term, though quickly found himself linked with a move away from the club, Chelsea mooted as one of the sides on his tail.

But as the window slammed shut he had stayed put and from the 28-year-old's viewpoint a transfer was never an issue.

"It is true that this year some clubs enquired, but it was very clear in my mind", he told AS.

"With the confidence that Diego Simeone gave me and what he told me, along with the president and the fans and the feeling I have for this club, it was very hard to leave.

"I decided to stay and I hope to still be here for many years", Godin concluded.

The centre-back joined Atletico Madrid from fellow Spanish outfit Villarreal in the summer of 2010, costing Los Rojiblancos around €8m.
