Aston Villa midfielder Ashley Westwood is looking ahead to a brighter future after a tough run of games for the Villans.

Villa faced Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City back-to-back in the last few weeks. They did secure all three points at Anfield, but lost the next three on the trot.

The Villa midfielder believes that his side gave the English champions a run for their money on Saturday and only individual brilliance late in the game helped the Citizens to win all three points at Villa Park.

He believes that the English champions had to work hard for their win and a plucky Villa side did create moments of insecurity for the champions.

"We had a good start”, Westwood told the club’s official site.

"Up until the 82nd minute we contained them and had chances to win it but that's why they're a top side – they only need half a chance and they took it.

"We can be really proud of the way we approached the game.

"I thought we were brilliant up until when they scored. We gave them a right good game.

"I think we frightened them at times.

"I thought Yaya Toure was quiet all game and then he popped up with the goal. That's why they pay millions of pounds for these players. But we competed well with them.”

Westwood feels despite a tough run of fixtures Villa did produce some fine performances against the top teams.

He added that it is important that the Villans capitalise on a reasonable start to the campaign and consolidate their position after the international break.

"We had a blip against Arsenal. But we stuck at it against Chelsea and now we've got to pick up points against the teams that are around us.

"We've had a very tough run. We've still had a great start.

"You'd have taken three points from this set of games. We're looking to push on now."

Villa are tenth in the league table on ten points and will travel to Merseyside after the international break to take on a struggling Everton side on 18th October at Goodison Park.
