Croatia captain Darijo Srna has advised his international team-mate Mateo Kovacic to quit Inter for the good of his career.

Kovacic has been tipped for great things and this summer caught the attention of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid, his standing only boosted by a good World Cup.

However, Inter fought hard to keep hold of the young midfielder and he stayed put at the San Siro as the summer transfer window slammed shut.

But Croatia captain Srna is concerned for Kovacic's future if he remains with the Nerazzurri, whose last three league finishes in Serie A have been sixth, ninth and fifth; a far cry from when they ruled Europe under Jose Mourinho.

"Kovacic is one of the best young players in Italy; he is the one that makes the difference", Srna was quoted as saying by Croatian broadcaster 24 Sata.

"But if he wants to prosper, he must change his path.

"Inter are far from their best days and he would improve quicker if he were at a better club", the Shakhtar Donetsk star added.

The 20-year-old was snapped up by Inter from Croatian talent factory Dinamo Zagreb in 2013, with the Nerazzurri splashing out an initial €11m to secure his signature.
