Gareth Bale's agent Jonathan Barnett has admitted that Manchester United offered more money for his client, but the Welshman wanted to go to Real Madrid.

Real Madrid swooped to snap Bale up from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2013, with the English club claiming to have received €100m for the forward, while the Spanish side put the figure at €91m.

Manchester United were also strongly linked with the 25-year-old, but could not tempt him to Old Trafford.

And according to Barnett, it was not for the lack of trying, as the Red Devils offered more money than Real Madrid.

"He always wanted to play for Madrid", the agent explained to Spanish daily AS.

"He could have gone to United and other clubs, but he wanted Madrid."

Asked whether more money was on the table away from the Bernabeu, Barnett replied: "Not much more, but…more."

The agent also revealed that Bale made clear he was not interested in joining Barcelona.

"I know that at one point Barcelona were also interested in him, but he said he did not want to go there.

"There were two agents who called me."
