Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin has rejected Manchester City’s advances and will continue at the Vicente Calderon, according to Madrid-based daily Marca.

The Citizens were reported to be ready to pay a sum of €40m for the defender and offer him a hefty salary of €6m per year.

But the Uruguay international has spurned the chance to play in the English Premier League with Manuel Pellegrini’s Manchester City, preferring to stay put in the Spanish capital.

Atletico Madrid are ready to offer a new contract to the centre-back and will increase his wages too as part of the new deal.

Although Los Rojiblancos’ offer doesn’t compare to that of the Citizens, he remains committed to the cause of the 2014 La Liga champions and is ready to commit his long-term future to the club by extending his existing deal beyond 2018.
