Benfica have still not managed to reach an agreement with Newcastle United linked Andreas Samaris, as they are reluctant to meet the midfielder's demands.

Newcastle came close to landing Samaris in the January transfer window and, with his contract expiring in the summer, will present an attractive free transfer bargain.

Benfica want to keep Samaris and the midfielder's preference is to stay, but new contract talks have hit choppy waters.

Samaris wants €1.5m per season, but according to Portuguese sports daily A Bola, Benfica do not want to go over €1m.

With the clock ticking down on the midfielder's contract, the pressure is on for Benfica to find an agreement or risk Samaris leaving.

The Greek schemer found himself out of favour during the first half of the season, but a coaching change worked to his advantage.

Samaris has started in Benfica's last 12 Portuguese league matches, helping power the Estadio da Luz club's title push.

Benfica sit three points behind leaders FC Porto, but do boast a game in hand and superior goal difference.
