Manchester United have only added one player, in Donny van de Beek, to the squad that finished third in the Premier League last season.

Solskjaer said at the end of last season that he wants two to three players in the transfer window in order to take his team to the next stage of development in the 2020/21 campaign.

Manchester United are still hopeful of signing Jadon Sancho, despite the transfer saga dragging on, but there is real frustration amongst the fanbase about the club’s perceived inactivity in the market.

Solskjaer conceded that the fans want to see the best Manchester United team on the pitch, but insisted that there were clear signs that the club made progress with Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James making an impact.

He insisted that the club are still working hard to make sure more signings are added to the squad in the next couple of weeks.

The Manchester United manager said in a press conference when asked about transfers: “Fans will always want the best possible team to watch, the best possible Man United team and that’s the passion we want and the history we have.

“We can look back 10 or 20 years and you look back at the great players we have and, for me, going forward, since Sir Alex left we’ve been averaging fifth, last season we got third which was a big step forward, everyone saw development – Bruno coming in, Harry being captain and showing leadership skills, Aaron did well.

“We want to take a step forward and we can go into the new season with confidence but we’re looking to give the group a boost and we’re working on it.”

There has been unease amongst Manchester United supporters, with rival clubs strengthening their squads while their club struggle to get deals over the line.
