The 22-year-old centre-back has been linked with a move away from Celtic in the ongoing transfer window with several clubs believed to be interested in him.

AC Milan are believed to be interested in him and the player is also believed to be tempted at the possibility of joining the Serie A giants ahead of next month’s deadline.

The Rossoneri are claimed to be working on tabling a bid for him and Maldini has not ruled out the possibility that Ajer is one of the central defenders the club are keeping tabs on him.

However, the AC Milan sporting director insisted that the Celtic defender is not the player the club are trying to sign at the moment.

Asked about interest in Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic and Ajer, Maldini told Sky Italia: “There are others.

“Those two can be part of a shortlist.

“But right now they are not names we are working on.”

Celtic are not keen on losing Ajer, but they could be tested with a bid from AC Milan before the window slams shut.
