Cavani was the match-winner for Manchester United on Sunday as he scored two goals and assisted to help them come back from two goals down to win 3-2 at Southampton.

The Uruguayan’s deadline day arrival was termed as a panic buy for Manchester United, but the veteran striker has already scored three times in five league appearances for the club.

Mata revealed that an early indication of Cavani’s arrival was provided by former Manchester United team-mate Ander Herrera, who spoke positively about the striker’s professional attitude.

The Spaniard admits that he has been playing a role in helping the striker to settle down at Manchester United and inside the dressing room.

Mata is clear that Cavani is a superstar, but insisted that he remains a humble guy behind the scenes and has brought more than just his experience to the Manchester United squad.

The Manchester United star told French sports daily L’Equipe: “Ander who knew him well, called me to say, ‘I think Edinson is going to come to your club and you will see he is a great guy and a real professional. I know you will help him’.

“This is what I have tried to do since his arrival, by answering his questions about the club or the functioning of the dressing room, but also serving his interpreter, especially with the staff.

“And as Ander predicted to me, I can see his professionalism.

“Edison has accomplished a lot of great things in his career, but he remains very simple.

“It’s great to have him, and he brings us his experience and a sense of purpose.”

There is a clamour for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to start Cavani against his former team Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night in the Champions League.
