Gerrard’s Rangers side have been hailed for the style of football they are playing and are firm favourites to win the Scottish Premiership and end Celtic’s dream of winning ten-in-a-row.

They are eleven points clear of Celtic in the league table and, despite the Bhoys still having two games in hand, are well placed to end their league trophy drought.

But Rough insists that there were suggestions that Gerrard should be sacked last season if Rangers did not win a trophy.

He stressed that the Rangers board deserve plaudits for sticking with Gerrard and backing him with the money needed to take the squad forward, despite his lack of success in his first two years.

Rough said on PLZ Soccer: “We have to remember as well that it was last year we were saying that if Steven Gerrard doesn’t win a cup, he should leave.

“That’s what he has turned around.

“We were falling into the trap of that he has not done this or that, but look at what he has done now.

“You have to give their board a bit of credit for digging in there and giving him the money obviously to get them to where they are.

“It certainly just shows how things can change in football.”

Rangers will book their place in the last 32 of the Europa League if they beat Standard Liege at Ibrox this evening.
