McGregor, currently in his second spell at Ibrox, is now the Gers all-time record appearance holder in Europe with 83, having started in the 3-2 win against Standard Liege in the Europa League on Thursday

The 38-year-old leader in the dressing room at Ibrox has 11 major pieces of silverware to his name, including three Scottish Premiership titles.

The jury is out among the fans on who Rangers’ greatest ever shot-stopper is, but Stewart insists McGregor is 100 per cent up there with the likes of Goram, who many consider the gold standard.

And Stewart feels McGregor’s ambition to feature in a European final is bound to push the veteran further on in the Europa League as the Gers wrapped up a top-two berth in Group D.

“It’s fantastic that he’s had the opportunity to come back to Rangers and these experiences in Europe certainly drives him on,” Stewart told The Athletic.

“I’m sure the further they go, without tempting fate, the more he’ll be thinking of fulfilling his remaining ambitions of playing in a European final.

“Andy Goram is the one people talk about all the time as the best.

“It’s difficult to argue with his exploits or even the guys in the 1950s and 60s, but Allan is 100 per cent right in the mix with these guys.

Rangers are now back in Scottish Premiership action on Sunday and are set for a trip to take on Ross County.
