Aouar was expected to leave Lyon in the summer and several clubs approached the French giants in a bid to thrash out an agreement.

Arsenal were interested but their bid was rejected out of hand by Lyon and the Gunners did not make another offer despite the midfielder being a top target.

Juventus were also interested and they came closest to signing him as they had a deal in place with Lyon and the player.

According to French sports daily L’Equipe, Juventus were prepared to pay €55m to Lyon and loan out Federico Bernardeschi to the French club for a season as part of the deal.

Aouar had agreed to move to Italy and a deal was in place between the player and Juventus for the potential transfer.

But the deal went off the rails as Bernardeschi did not want to leave Juventus and was not sold on a move to Lyon after initially agreeing to the deal.

Juventus were still in the race but Douglas Costa’s departure to Bayern Munich came too late and they did not have time to sign the Frenchman.

Aouar is unlikely to leave Lyon in January and could wait until the summer for a transfer.
