Bruce has been battling the gloom at Newcastle and has struggled to win over the fans at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle’s defeat against Brentford in the EFL Cup quarter-final heaped immense pressure on the Magpies boss and there were calls for him to be sacked.

Bruce’s side were expected to get nothing from their game against Liverpool on Wednesday night, but Newcastle became the first side this season in the league to stop the Reds from scoring in a 0-0 draw.

Nolan feels that the result against Liverpool will elevate some of the pressure Bruce and Newcastle have been in recent days and they could have even nicked a win against the Reds.

He believes the point against Liverpool gives Newcastle something to build upon for the rest of the campaign.

The former Newcastle star said on Premier League TV after the game: “He’ll be pleased, Steve Bruce.

“They have been under a bit of pressure, he has been under a bit of pressure, but they have shown a great bit of determination.

“And they could have nicked it there from the set-piece with Ciaran Clark and Alisson making a good save.

“All in all, Newcastle will be really pleased with the point and it is something they can now build on.”

Newcastle are 14th in the league table on 19 points, eight points ahead of the relegation zone.
