The Reds conceded a late goal at Elland Road on Monday to only earn a point from their trip to Leeds and it has handed their top four hopes a blow, though it may not matter if the European Super League starts as planned.

Liverpool scored the first goal in the first half but failed to take advantage of any more chances and Leeds enjoyed the better of the second 45 minutes.

Whelan believes that the poor decision-making of some of the Liverpool stars was again on display at Elland Road, especially with Andrew Robertson squandering an opportunity on the break.

He admitted that he does not know why so many top players in the Liverpool side have been consistently making bad decisions on the ball during crucial points of games this season.

Whelan, post match, said on LFC TV: “Decision-making is gone, I don’t know what has happened.

“The worst scenario was Robbo tonight when he got down that left-hand side and he didn’t know whether to give it to [Diogo] Jota or [Roberto] Firmino and in the end, he just ran it out of play.

“I don’t know why it has happened or how it has happened but so many good players are making a bad decisions when we are in very good areas.”

Liverpool are still two points behind the top four spots and will be hosting Newcastle United at Anfield on Saturday.
