Leeds took the lead at St. James’ Park through a brilliant goal from Raphinha early on, and the Whites had Newcastle on the ropes in the first half.

But Newcastle made their way back into the game and equalised on the stroke of half-time through some brilliance from Allan Saint-Maximin.

Ferdinand admitted that once Leeds took the lead he was afraid that his former side could crumble due to their current form and the acrimony towards the team inside St. James’ Park.

However, he was delighted to see the character on the show from Newcastle to get back into the game and believes there were points in the game where the home side could have even won the game, something they will be disappointed not to have done.

The former Newcastle star said on Premier League TV: “I think they showed good character after going one down.

“I was fearful for them and thought if they did go one down in the game it could be trouble, but they showed really good character to come back and make it 1-1.

“They had the ascendency for periods of that game and once Leeds went one up and I thought they would go on and this could be a long night for Newcastle, but it didn’t turn out that way.

“They will probably be disappointed that they didn’t win the game.”

Newcastle only have two points from their opening five games and are still waiting for their first win.
