Manchester United have handed Rangnick the manager’s job until the end of the season, after which point he will move into a consultancy role at Old Trafford.

Rangnick played a key part in taking Haaland to Red Bull Salzburg during his time working with the Austrian side and now wants to use his good relationship with the player’s agent and father to make a move to Old Trafford happen.

Landing Haaland would be a big boost for Manchester United and a feather in Rangnick’s cap, with the striker expected to be the most coveted player in world football next summer.

A release clause will come into effect in his Borussia Dortmund contract and a host of sides are tipped to try to snap him up.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are keen on Haaland, but will face competition for his signature.

The Citizens lost out on Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United last summer and will not want to lose another target to their rivals.

However, Manchester United will hope that the presence of Rangnick can tilt the scales in their favour.
