The Citizens failed with their efforts in the summer to snap up Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur to replace Sergio Aguero and are on the lookout for a new striker this month.

It has emerged that Manchester City are locked in talks with Argentine giants River Plate over a move for their star Alvarez this month.

However, former Argentine international Rodriguez has suggested the 21-year-old might want to spend one more season at the Buenos Aires outfit.

Rodriguez acknowledged that Alvarez is a man in-demand at present and stressed he is capable of operating across all positions in attack.

“I haven’t seen a player like that in Argentina for a long time”, Rodriguez told Italian broadcaster RTV 38 while discussing Alvarez’s future.

“Everyone wants him, but I think he wants to stay at River for another season.

“He can fill all the roles in attack, he’s really good.”

Alvarez is claimed to have a release clause in his contract in the £15m to£17m and it remains to be seen whether he will move to Manchester City before the window slams shut.
