Leeds are expected to offer him a new contract over the summer with the club now looking forward, after surviving in the Premier League.

But Phillips is wanted at several clubs and Manchester City are believed to be interested in signing him as the replacement for Fernandinho.

And McCoist conceded if Manchester City want to take snare Phillips away from Leeds, the player would find it hard to reject an offer from the champions of England.

The Scotsman stressed that Leeds were hamstrung by injuries to key players in the recently concluded league season and he would love to see them at their best with their top players next term.

But McCoist believes if Manchester City make an offer for Phillips, the player cannot be blamed for wanting to leave Leeds.

McCoist said on talkSPORT: “I don’t know if it’s the right time but certainly if Manchester City come calling I’d imagine it would be very difficult for him to turn it down.

“I feel a bit disappointed for the Leeds fans who haven’t had a great season.

“They finished off the season exceptionally well with that win at Brentford but their key players have been out, the spine of the team – Cooper, Phillips, Bamford have been out.

“Personally, I would love to see Leeds next season with all their key players together again with one or two additions.

“But if you are asking me if Manchester City will come calling for you and whether you’d be interested, you better believe it and he is an excellent player.”

Leeds are desperate to hold on to the player and are hopeful that Phillips will sign a new contract.
