Haaland turned out to be the match winner on Wednesday night when he scored a brilliant volley to help Manchester City beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the Champions League.

The Norwegian has scored 13 goals in nine appearances this season and has been tipped to break Manchester City’s Champions League hoodoo at the end of the campaign.

The noise and hype around Haaland have been huge but De Bruyne is keen to temper some of that while his team-mate continues to score goals.

The Belgian stressed that over his eight years at Manchester City, he has played with several top players and pointed out that he saw Sergio Aguero, the club’s record goalscorer, in action.

However, he did admit that Haaland has emerged as the new sensation in modern football.

Asked if Haaland is getting praised a bit too much, De Bruyne told broadcaster RTL7: “You should do what you want.

“I have been playing here for eight years, I have played with top, top players.

“[Like] when you play with someone like Kun Aguero, who has scored more than 200 goals for this club.

“He [Haaland] is a sensation right now.”

Haaland has a release clause in his Manchester City contract that is expected to come into effect in 2024.
