Bernard, who is a product of Manchester United academy, spent last season on loan with Hull City, featuring 28 times for the Tigers.

This season the 22-year-old centre-back trained regularly with Erik Ten Hag’s senior squad but due to a lack of game time has signed a loan deal with Portsmouth.

Mousinho pointed out that Bernard has previous experience of playing senior level football with Hull and Salford City and believes the Red Devils loanee is an excellent centre-back.

The Portsmouth boss stressed that Bernard is a player who can play anywhere in defence and feels that the player provides athleticism, speed and strength to Pompey’s backline.

Mousinho also admitted that everyone at Portsmouth is excited to see the Manchester United star signing for them

“Luckily enough for us, although not many may know what he is all about, it was quite easy for us to find that out because he was not just an Under-23’s player coming from obscurity”, Mousinho said on BBC Radio Solent.

“He had a loan at Salford and a loan at Hull, where he played quite a number of games in League Two and the Championship, respectively.

“So it gave us a lot of footage to look at him and actually judge him by league football rather than Premier League 2.

“So that was really positive.

“Di’Shon is an excellent defender, he can play across the backline, but he is mainly comfortable as a centre-half or right-back.

“He provides a lot of athleticism, pace and power.

“He is aggressive in the air as well and he is not bad on the ball, so he is the one we are really excited about.”

Portsmouth will welcome sixth placed Barnsley on Saturday to Fratton Park and all eyes will be on Bernard to see whether he will make his Pompey debut against Michael Duff’s side.
