Newcastle are flying high this season and the Magpies are one of the prime candidates to finish in the top four to land Champions League football for next season.

The Magpies have conceded only 19 goals in their 26 games, boasting the best defensive record in the league this season.

Dabizas pointed out that solidity in Newcastle’s backline is the main reason behind their excellent campaign so far this season.

The former Magpies star believes that by not conceding too much, Newcastle’s defence help the whole team maintain their balance by not risking leaving gaps by going forward.

“The club is very balanced in their defensive approach and of course it is paying off”, Dabizas told Chronicle Live.

“The recipe for success has been that they are balanced defensively and not concede too many.

“When you are conceding goals it upsets the balance and you end up taking more risks, sending more players forward, you leave gaps.

“We had that bond in 2002 and the togetherness.

“The atmosphere around the club is very vibrant and positive now so that is the main similarity that I identify with this season and 20 years ago.”

Newcastle are set to face Manchester United on Sunday and Howe’s side will be eager to take revenge for the EFL Cup final defeat they suffered at the hands of Erik ten Hag’s men in February.
