Diaby was on Newcastle’s wish list last summer as well and they held talks with Leverkusen but never managed to reach an agreement.

Newcastle are chasing Champions League football this season but are almost certain to be involved in some sort of European competition in the 2023/24 campaign.

Eddie Howe wants more quality and depth in his squad and Diaby is a player the Newcastle manager is keen to sign.

And it has been claimed that they are prepared to break their transfer record to sign him.

Newcastle paid a fee of £63m to sign Alexander Isak last summer and that figure would have to be breached to sign Diaby.

There is a willingness in the Newcastle hierarchy to do exactly that and land a marquee target in the summer.

Leverkusen want a fee of €100m before agreeing to sell the Frenchman and want to get the top price possible.

Newcastle are reportedly yet to settle on a shortlist of targets but Diaby’s name is certain to be in it.
