Karius was signed in September of last year until the end of the current season in the absence of second-choice Martin Dubravka, who went out on loan to Manchester United.

Newcastle’s qualification for the Champions League next season could see the German goalkeeper getting more minutes under his belt in domestic cup matches, in the event he signs a new deal.

Eddie Howe has talked with Karius over a possible deal to stay at St. James’ Park as a backup goalkeeper.

However, the former Liverpool man is considering his options as he decides what is the next best step in his career.

It has been claimed that Italian clubs are interested in securing the goalkeeper’s signature.

Due to Nick Pope’s good run of form throughout the season, Karius played in only one match for the Magpies.

The German goalkeeper played in this year’s EFL Cup final against Manchester United in a 2-0 loss, for which Pope was suspended.

With the other Newcastle backup goalkeepers set to seek first-team action for the upcoming season, Karius will have a decision to make on his future.
