The Magpies are keen on Phillips and have been hoping that a deal could be done to take him to St James’ Park this summer.

However, Phillips has decided that he wants to stay at Manchester City and fight for a bigger role at the club next season.

He started just two Premier League games for the Citizens this term, following a big money move from Leeds United.

With Phillips not looking to leave, Newcastle will face disappointment unless Manchester City decide they want to shift him off the books.

And Newcastle have asked Manchester City to keep them informed of developments regarding Phillips.

Eddie Howe is keen to sign a deep-lying midfielder in the summer transfer window and Phillips is regarded as fitting the bill.

If Manchester City do push him to go, then Newcastle are likely to have competition to land Phillips however.

The midfielder is currently in the process of trying to help Manchester City with an historic treble.
