Aidy White has stressed that Leeds United winger Willy Gnonto was playing with a burden on his shoulders earlier in the season compared to the free-flowing player he has been looking like in recent games.

Gnonto has started the last two Championship games and his goal was the difference between Leeds and Bristol City earlier this month.

He was again very good on Saturday as Leeds hammered Rotherham United 3-0 at Elland Road in a Yorkshire derby.

White admitted that Gnonto is again looking like a player who is playing with some confidence under his belt.

He believes the winger looked burdened earlier in the season due to the fractious summer he had when he tried to leave Leeds and feels he was trying hard to prove himself again.

However, White thinks in recent weeks he is looking like the Gnonto of last season who was direct and played with a smile on his face.

The former Leeds star said on BBC Radio Leeds: “I thought he was very good [against Rotherham].

“In his last two or three performances, he just looks like he has got his confidence back.

“He looked like that he was playing with a weight on his shoulders, almost trying to get that summer out of his system and trying to prove a point.

“He seemed like he was trying too hard; it didn’t seem like that their performances earlier were natural.

“But now he looks like the Willy Gnonto of old – happy, electric, direct and so he looks like he has found his form again.”

Gnonto will hope to add more goals to his tally of two in the Championship in the latter half of the season.
