Germany international goalkeeper Robert Enke has tragically died. The Hannover man was hit by a train in an apparent suicide yesterday and sent the football world into mourning. La Liga giants Barcelona held a minute’s silence last night in what is sure to be the first of many to honour his memory.
The 32-year-old lost a daughter in 2006 to a rare heart condition and never recovered from her loss.
Enke enjoyed a playing career which saw him represent many giants of world football. Having left Germany in 1999, he headed to Portugal and played for Benfica, from where he was snapped up by Barcelona. Following the retirement of Jens Lehmann after Euro 2008, Enke had been declared as Germany’s number one and was expected to play a crucial role at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
He leaves behind a wife and daughter.
