With the transformation of Cesc Fabregas from a young budding talent into a bona fide world-class midfielder, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has been eager to lure the 22-year-old back to the team from which he came. According to Sport, with the added incentive of the club’s upcoming presidential elections in 2010, Laporta will undoubtedly benefit from capturing a player that the Catalan giants have sought for years.
But when it comes to acquiring world-class talent, it is seldom done without competition. And Laporta will be rivalled by the toughest of opposition in the form of Florentino Perez. The Real Madrid president is said to have earmarked the Arsenal captain as his new prime target after having already captured Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.
With Real’s ability to break the bank to acquire top-class players, Laporta could face an uphill task in acquiring the services of the coveted midfielder, who has repeatedly expressed his desire to remain at Arsenal. An outrageous bid, in the region of Ronaldo’s recent transfer, could however tempt the Gunners to offload the young Spaniard—a luxury Laporta is unfortunately without. Fabregas is on fire at the moment, scoring nine goals in 15 games and has been influential in the London side’s resurgence as legitimate title contenders.
