Argentina legend Daniel Passarella has won the race to become River Plate’s new president after a night of fevered vote counting. Firstly it was believed, according to France Football, that Rodolfo D’Onofrio had won the election by a mere two votes, however, a recount gave the election to Passarella.

Passarella’s election will not doubt be welcomed by the River Plate faithful, and given the club’s terrible showing in the Argentine league thus far, hopes will be high that he can reform Los Millionairos. The club have sunk in recent years and are struggling to assert their dominance, falling behind traditional rivals Boca Juniors.

The 56-year-old enjoyed two spells with River, the first from 1974-82 and the second from 1988-89. Passarella also coached the national team between 1994-98.
