With Arsenal experiencing a shortage of strikers, with Robin van Persie looking to miss the rest of the season, and Nicklas Bendtner still out injured, it has been assumed by many that manager Arsene Wenger has no choice but to strengthen his squad in January. Many have pointed to out-of-favour Real Madrid striker, and former Manchester United player Ruud van Nistelrooy as his prime target – an idea the Frenchman isn’t too keen to explore.

Speaking about the potential capture of the clinical Dutchman, Wenger said to Sky Sports, “It would not be the best of starts, bearing in mind our past relationship!

Moreover, Wenger feels it will be unlikely to make a purchase in January, as there are too many stumbling blocks to overcome. “We can’t dream too much of finding a world class player because that’s what is needed to strengthen our team. But they also need not to be European cup-tied and who is also free, so we must hope Father Christmas is good to us!"
