Although Wayne Rooney was snoozing when the World Cup draw was happening in South Africa, he was ultimately pleased at how it all turned out. England have avoided the “group of death” and are almost certain to progress from a group that includes the USA, Slovenia, and Algeria.

It was a good draw,” he said to The Times. “The USA are a good team. I saw them play Spain in the Confederations Cup on telly and that’ll be the difficult game for us. We should win against the other two teams but we need to respect them. We played Slovenia two months ago and beat them 2-1. It will be a tough game but it could have been worse.

Wayne Rooney is looking forward to a successful World Cup next year, and barring any extraordinary circumstances, looks certain to progress. England fans will be pleased the vital striker is firing on all cylinders for his club, having already bagged his 12th goal of the season against West Ham at the weekend.
