Manchester United evergreen Ryan Giggs has been named 2009’s Sports Personality of the Year. The 36-year-old beat the likes of F1 champion Jensen Button, and heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis, who came in second and third respectively.
"This is a big shock," admitted Giggs. "I’d like to thank the BBC for putting on a brilliant night and everyone who voted for me. Honestly, this feels unbelievable. I’ve been lucky enough to win a lot of things in my career, playing with great players, playing for the greatest manager that’s ever lived, and playing for the greatest club.”
The Welshman is the first footballer to receive the award since former Man Utd team-mate David Beckham snagged the title in 2001. This is another achievement to add to Giggs’ already overflowing cabinet of trophies and medals.
