Liverpool are seemingly on the verge of pipping Boca Juniors to the loan signing of Maxi Rodriguez. The Argentine is desperate for first-team football in order to push his bid for a spot in Argentina’s World Cup squad, but currently at Atletico Madrid he is struggling for minutes on the pitch.
The 28-year-old, who will turn 29 tomorrow, was thought to be heading back home with Boca Juniors confident of announcing his arrival. The entrance of Liverpool though looks to have ended that hope.
Rodriguez is believed to have been encouraged to make the move to England by friend Javier Mascherano, and with money tight at Liverpool the Argentine fits manager Rafael Benitez’s bill perfectly.
The winger come midfielder arrived in Spain with Espanyol, spending three years in Barcelona before making a €7M move to Atletico. Despite having been part of the Argentina Under-20 squad which won the FIFA World Youth Cup in 2001, and ending as top scorer, Rodriguez failed to hit the heights many had hoped for.
