Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has surprisingly ruled out selling Dutch forward Ryan Babel in the January transfer window. The Spanish boss, when asked about Babel following the side’s 1-1 FA Cup draw away to Championship relegation battlers Reading said, "He has to work hard. He is our player and he will have his chance. At this moment we are not trying to sell him."
How happy Babel is at Anfield though remains to be seen. The Dutchman has struggled for playing time and is known to be concerned about the effect this will have on chances of featuring for Holland at the World Cup. Indeed, Babel has in the past already tried and failed to push through a loan move to Ajax.
The 23-year-old striker will now look for Benitez to provide him with the first-team chances he has promised as he looks to make an impression in English football. Once rated as one of the brightest talents of his generation in Holland, Babel’s career has stalled on Merseyside.
