Blackburn Rovers may lose striker Benni McCarthy in January, as the South African is eyeing more playing time to secure his place in his country’s World Cup squad. Manager Sam Allardyce is understood to be reluctant to let the player go, but is resigned to the fact that the 32-year-old could very much leave if a suitable club approaches.

“Benni thinks he should be playing more games, but I think that is down to him more than me,” Allardyce said to The Times.

McCarthy enjoyed a remarkable first season with Rovers when he joined from Porto in 2006, scoring 24 goals in 50 appearances, making him the second top scorer of the Premier League. The two subsequent campaigns however, saw his goal output lower significantly, something that has continued this term. McCarthy has managed a meagre four goals in 16 appearances so far this season.
