Only a little over a year after William Gallas’ Arsenal career looked all but over, his manager Arsene Wenger now has nothing but praise for the defender.

Stripped of his duties as captain after publicly criticising his team-mates last season, the former Chelsea man has responded by forming a formidable partnership with Thomas Vermaelen in the centre of the Gunners defense. Such is his manager’s satisfaction with his performances, that a contract extension seems inevitable.

"I had a pre-meeting with his agents a month ago and we agreed to meet again at the beginning of the year," Wenger said in The Guardian. Asked whether he would offer to extend the 32-year-old Frenchman’s contract for only 12 months, he replied, "Unfortunately, that is the rule here. But for a striker at 32 you can only give a year. For a defender, we’ll see. I don’t know his thoughts. We have never spoken about his plans, so I will see what they are."
