Burnley chairman Barry Kilby could not hide his frustration at the decision of Owen Coyle to leave the club for Bolton Wanderers. Speculation was rife that the deal would push through within the week, and they have been proven true despite Burnley’s best efforts to keep their manager.

"Obviously it has been a trauma for the football club," Kilby said in The Guardian. "None of us wanted Owen to go and it was a shock when this broke. We put our case strongly and were very hopeful that he would stay with us, but he decided to carry on and go to Bolton.”

Kilby criticised Coyle’s decision to leave the club at such a critical moment in the season to join Bolton, who are also fighting to avoid relegation, saying "I fully expected when he did move it would be upwards, not sideways to a club with whom we are fighting a relegation scrap.” Former Derby manager Paul Jewell is seen as his likely replacement.
