Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is worried about the contract situation regarding youngster Fran Merida, who has been linked with a move to Spanish side Atletico Madrid. Despite a verbal agreement apparently agreed with the club in November, the 19-year-old’s negotiations have since stalled, prompting speculation the Spanish player could be on his way out.
Hope of a deal being agreed have increased however, with Merida admitting he has only been negotiating with the Gunners: "At the moment I’m in talks with the boss," he told Arsenal’s Official Matchday Programme. "My agent and I are only talking to Arsenal at the moment and nobody else."
Merida has made six first-team appearances for the North London club so far this season, and scored his first goal in a 2-1 Carling Cup Fourth Round triumph over rivals Liverpool.
